In an effort to keep our community and most vulnerable healthy, Second Nature Lactation has made the decision to go virtual until further notice.

Karissa has the experience and technology to conduct consults using a secure telehealth system. This software was chosen to insure ease with our clients on nearly any device.

Menu of Virtual Lactation Consultations Options

Initial Lactation Consult, $120.

Aetna and Humana Members: There is no out of pocket expense.

You will be sent a questionnaire prior to meeting so that our time together is spent collaborating and assessing, rather than filling out paperwork.  A comprehensive care plan will be sent after the consult. Topics may include but are not limited to: 

  • Achieving a  Comfortable Latch
  • Positioning Guidance
  • Understanding Baby Cues
  • Normal Newborn Behavior
  • Feeding Assessment
  • Creating an Effective Gameplan
  • Building and/or Maintaining a Milk Supply 
  • Insuring Adequate Weight Gain
  • Encouragement for Parent
  • Transitioning from Bottle to Breast
  • Breast and Nipple Care and Comfort

These appointments are designed for follow up care with an existing client.

You will receive a questionnaire to complete prior to our appointment so that our time together is focused on creating an effective, efficient and sustainable pumping plan.  Topics may include:

  • The How Tos of Exclusive Pumping
  • Creating a Customized Pumping Schedule
  • Preparing to Return to Work 
  • How to Bottle Feed a Breastfed Baby

A comprehensive questionnaire will be sent prior to class so that Karissa can be better tailor the appointment to your needs and interests. Topics may include:

Do you take insurance?

We are in network with Aetna . We also process payments from FSA/HSA  cards. After a consultation, you will be sent a superbill that you can submit to insurance for a reimbursement request. To learn more, including if you are a Duke Employee with Aenta, click here

How many consults will I need?

Initial consults are pretty darn comprehensive.. Usually one consult will get you moving in the right direction, and very often that is all that is necessary.

Lactation consultations are customized to meet a client's needs. It is your time to discuss the topics you want to address. There are hundreds of reasons to see Karissa, here are a few:
