The Anatomy of a Lactation Consultation

Karissa has nearly two decades of perinatal care experience and has been an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant for over a decade. She has worked and taught in university hospitals, birth centers, and within private OBGYN and Pediatric practices. She has supported over 5,000 dyads. Her approach is evidenced based and compassionate. She is a native English speaker. To learn more visit here.

Consultations may feel casual and relaxed, but they are comprehensive. When reserving a consultation, you will be sent an intake form. Karissa reviews this information prior to your consult so that she has a clear idea of your health and birth history. The time spent with you is dedicated to discussion, collaboration and hands on support.

So what do you need to have handy for the consult?

  • Have everything you use on a  daily basis to feed your baby available at the consult. Have questions about your pump? Bring it!  Are we working on bottle refusal- consider having some pumped milk available. Have a favorite pillow you nurse with? Have it handy!
  • I highly suggest that if possible, your Partner or a support person attends the consult with you.
  • In addition, having a list with all of your questions can be helpful to insure all topics are covered. Notes needn't be taken- a comprehensive summary of the consult will be sent to you.
  • Come exactly as you are in the moment. Karissa will meet you where you are with compassion.

FAQs and Procedures

An  invoice will be sent after the consult, which can be used to request reimbursement from your insurance provider.  To learn more about Dutch insurance reimbursement, please click here.

In person consults often require travel and additional prep time, and usually last longer. These considerations are factored into the cost of the consult. Karissa travels to towns including but not limited to: Delft, Den Haag, Den Hoorn, Nootdorp, Pijnaker, Rijswijk, Rotterdam and Zoetermeer. Karissa does travel throughout The Netherlands, and any additional travel fees will be discussed prior to the appointment.

Your well being is of the utmost importance. You are encouraged to contact Karissa directly if you have questions or concerns about your care with Second Nature Lactation.

Every IBCLC lactation consultant is legally required to be registered with an external dispute resolution body, where you as a client can submit your complaint.

The dispute resolution body is an independent institution. It primarily acts as a mediator. If this proves insufficient, further steps are also possible. The decision is binding. To learn more visit NVL or contact Klachtenportaal Zorg
