  • A prenatal meeting to set yourself up for success
  • Breast or bottle refusal

What Can I Expect From a Lactation Consult?

Karissa is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, IBCLC, and offers lactation and breastfeeding support to Parents and Babies in their Raleigh- Durham Triangle homes, or at our Apex office. Customized care plans  identify individual needs and goals based on a comprehensive examination and evaluation. No two consults are the same, but this is what a postpartum consult visit may look like.

First, Getting  To Know One Another and Establishing Goals

The first part of the meeting is about getting to know where you are in your journey. Karissa will have reviewed your intake forms and may want to expand the conversation about your medical history and perinatal experience. She will ask you what your lactation goals are, and identify how to best proceed to reach those goals. She may conduct an exam to assess breast health.  Karissa is here to support all Families including those who do not want to, or cannot  chestfeed, as well as those who do breastfeed.

Next, Comprehensive Exams and Assessments

Next, Karissa will get to know your little one and may examine your baby's oral anatomy and suckling ability. She will ask questions about the baby's health history.  She may observe them at the breast/chest and note pre and postfeed weight with her scale.  Feeding is NOT ballet. There are no perfect positions!  During the feeding assessment, Karissa will help you find the most comfortable way for you to feed your baby. If you own a pump, you may be asked to express, and she is happy to offer guidance with this.

Then, Collaboration On a Plan That is Attainable and Sustainable

Karissa will then work with you on a sustainable care plan. Her goal is leave you with suggestions and goals that are attainable, realistic and have your stamp approval. Some plans may simple breastfeeding tips with follow up, while others will be suggestions to build confidence as you continue on your journey. These customized plans and meeting notes will be  in your portal and can forwarded to your Health Care Provider(s).

Finally, Putting the Care Plan into Action and Evaluating Progress

Karissa offers (1) fifteen minute Telehealth video call after consults, and email exchanges on our secure portal. After a few days of working the care plan, it is important to reevaluate and tweak as needed.

Do you take insurance?

We are an out of network provider; however, we do take FSA/HSA  card payments. After a consultation, you will be sent a superbill that you can submit to insurance for a reimbursement request.

What should I bring with me to a consult?

Bring anything and everything that you use in your daily life to feed your baby. It could range from just the two of you and a pillow, to bringing pumps, bottles and your extended family.

How quickly can I be seen?

We try to get you in as soon as possible. We've been there and know that support is needed quickly! If you need to be seen same day, please call 919-961-9885 as our portal will not allow you to schedule any earlier than a day out.

How many consults will I need?

Initial consults are pretty darn comprehensive and we  encourage email and video chat  follow up. Usually one consult will get you moving in the right direction, and very often that is all that is necessary.
